CGA-FERT Partnership

Brief

The Partnership between CGA – Fert has been in existence since July 2014 when it started with two Counties (Nakuru and Narok) and has since expanded to additional three counties from 2018 to now cover Nakuru, Narok, Laikipia, Meru and Uasin Gishu. The main focus of CGA-Fert partnership is institutional development and organizational strengthening with the aim of enhancing service delivery to CGA members both at the County and National level. These services referred to include farmer representation and advocacy, technical (advisory and extension) and economic services (input and output market linkages) and information services (prices, markets, weather advisory).

There are three programmes currently being implemented in the 5 mentioned Counties.

I. Sepop (Producer Organization Services and Advocacy) Project

This is a project that seeks to enhance the technical and governance capacity of CGA’s farmer leadership at the County and National levels to support the delivery of services to its members. The overall objective of SEPOP is to contribute to the development of the cereal farming sector and the improvement of the livelihoods of CGA’s family farms through the strengthening of a sustainable CGA leadership and governance structure.

The project commenced on the 1st July 2020 and will run until 31st July 2023.

Laikipia, Meru, Nakuru, Narok and Uasin Gishu Counties but with specific activities in the other counties.

Objectives

  1. To improve the quality and deployment of the services offered by leaders to farmers who are members of CGA. The leaders in this context include farmers advisors, chapter leaders at the Ward, subcounty, county and national levels.
  2. To strengthen the legitimacy of leaders at the county and national level
  3. To increase farmer leaders involvement in the development and implementation of inclusive, sustainable, and co-managed public policies.

Project Activities

  • Development of targeted services for small, medium and large-scale farmers including CGA’s associate members
  • Improvement of the quality of field services in the 5 counties the various categories of CGA farmers
  • Strengthening CGA representation, lobbying, advocacy, and training capacity at county and national level

II. TransFert program (TF)

Since 2015, Fert is engaged in the implementation of the TransFert program in partnership with AFD. This program contributes to the development of agricultural services amongst CGA farmers. So far there have been 3 phases of TransFert, that is TF1, TF2, and TF3. We are currently in TF3.  In 2020, Fert embedded the Farmer Organizations for Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific Countries (FO4ACP) Project in its TransFert program with CGA.

FO4ACP

This project is a sub-contract agreement between CGA and Fert under the funding programme signed between AgriCord and EU and IFAD in 2019. Fert is supporting CGA under the project “Cereal Value Chain Development” with co-financing from TransFert program, implemented by Fert and CGA with the support of AFD.

Introduction

The overall objective of the FO4ACP program is to increase income and improve livelihoods, food and nutrition security, and safety of organized smallholder and family farmers in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific (ACP) countries.

Period

This is a 3-year program that commenced on the 1st of January 2020 and will run until 31st March 2023.

Objectives

  1. To accompany the development of economic activities for CGA farmers
  2. To strengthen CGA’s members’ capacity to engage in policy dialogue for an improved agribusiness environment
  3. To strengthen the institutional capacity of CGA and its constituents
