Healthy soil represents the most critical resource for farmers worldwide, determining the capacity to sustain crop production. CGA members across Kenya, particularly in Narok, have reported declining soil productivity stemming from unsustainable farming methods and excessive inorganic fertilizer use.
In response, CGA partnered with FERT and the Louis Dreyfus Foundation to recruit agronomist Samuel Njogo to advance agroecological practices and soil restoration techniques. The organisation developed a soil health training curriculum emphasising organic products and sustainable methods.
On November 30, 2022, CGA conducted practical training for Narok farmer leaders and field staff at Paul Koluo farm. Trainees examined soil characteristics including colour, smell, layering, root development, aggregate structure, texture, and organism diversity — recognising that sustainable soil management requires long-term investment in crop residue coverage, hardpan disruption, and organic amendments.
