The #16DaysofActivism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign

The #16DaysofActivism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, observed annually from November 25 to December 10, advocates for collective action against violence and systemic inequalities faced by women and girls. For Cereal Growers Association (CGA), this campaign serves as a crucial reminder of the pivotal role women play in agriculture and the urgent need to tackle the distinct challenges they encounter in this field.

Agriculture forms the economic backbone of many regions, particularly in Africa, where women's contributions to food production are substantial. Nonetheless, women in agriculture often confront entrenched inequalities that perpetuate poverty and disenfranchisement. Some of the challenges they face include significant wage gaps, with women in agriculture typically earning up to 25% less for the same work under comparable conditions, thus limiting their financial autonomy and contributing to gender-based economic violence. Women also often hold low-wage, labor-intensive jobs in agriculture, usually without job security or benefits, and are underrepresented in leadership, decision-making, and ownership of productive assets like land and equipment. Additionally, they face health risks from handling pesticides, operating machinery without proper training or protection, and working under strenuous conditions, with healthcare services that cater to their specific needs often lacking in many areas. Women frequently have restricted access to credit, training, agricultural inputs, and technology, further diminishing their productivity and impeding their capacity to thrive in the agricultural sector.
Acknowledging these systemic obstacles, CGA continues to advance gender equality and empower women in agriculture through various initiatives.

These initiatives include specialized training for women farmers, covering sustainable farming, financial literacy, and leadership, enabling them to manage their agricultural businesses effectively.
CGA collaborates with partners like Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA) to ensure women farmers are equipped with better market skills, ensuring they can sell their goods at fair prices, thus fostering financial independence.
CGA also advocates for dignified employment opportunities for women in the agricultural sector and emphasize the importance of safe work conditions by offering training on proper pesticide use and protective equipment. Moreover, CGA vigorously backs female-led agricultural enterprises, providing mentorship and networking opportunities to aid women in moving from manual labor to leadership and ownership roles.
During the #16DaysOfActivism, it is crucial to acknowledge the link between gender-based violence and economic disparity. Tackling the obstacles that women in agriculture face is not just a question of justice but also a step towards wider economic and social progress. CGA is unwavering in its dedication to dismantling the barriers confronting women in agriculture, ensuring they receive dignity, equity, and respect. Collectively, we can forge an agricultural domain where each woman is secure, emboldened, and esteemed.
